In anticipation of upgrading to WM6 and with the speed bumps in activating MS
Reader, I came upon a thread with instructions on how to backup an MS reader
activation for your device. I've got a Treo 750 and an Ipaq 2795 PDA. The
list of files to backup are listed below and are located in the device's
Windows folder.
I found and backed up all the files except for "Microsoft
Activation.unload". I've tried doing a search for it, but came up empty. I
have gone into folder options and "unhid" all file types. Where do I find
this file so I cam back it up?

secrepid.dat
secrep.dat
secrep.dll
secrep.xml
Microsoft Activation.unload

Microsoft.Activation.unload is only necessary to uninstall the Activation.
It is created at the time of installation. It is not needed in order to use
your activation and will only take up space on your device as it will be
un-usable on your new device.

If you have any further questions please feel free to reply back and I will
do my best to assist you further.

Thanks, Christine.

What if I need to uninstall the activation from my Device for some reason?
Will it look for that file?

I also have another question regarding ebooks... My MS Reader activation
uses my passport login which is my AOL address. I am considering phasing
myself out of using AOL email, but my MS Reader and ebooks are activated with
my AOL address. I'm not exactly sure if the ebooks (secure) that I purchase
are somehow linked to that specific address or not. If I do decide to
totally phase out of AOL and register another email address, will it have any
affect on the secure MS Reader ebooks that I already own? I haven't looked
into it yet, but am I allowed to change the email address that I use to log
into the MS Passport site and this forum?

THanks.

The Microsoft.Activation.Unload file is specific to the device that the
activation was originally installed on so I doubt that it would work on a
new device. You can try it however, and if it does indeed work please reply
back as I am sure that others could benefit from your experience.

As far as your AOL address is concerned you can change this in passport and
still maintain access to your titles.

If you want to retain access to your titles you will need to do the
following:

Sign into http://www.passport.com with your old passport account
Choose Credentials | Change your e-mail address.
You will then be presented with a form allowing you to change to the new
email address.

Once you have your new email address you can go to the activation site and
reactivate if you wish but you should not need to.

When you activate a new device or machine you will use your revised passport
credentials to activate.

Sincerely,

Hi,

I am using Windows XP. Seeing you here I'd like to ask for your help. I have
a collection of licensed DRMed ebooks in Reader Tablet PC Edition. I know
there is a number limit on activation on the same PC. I periodically
reformat my computer and that's one activation gone everytime I do that. Is
there a way to deactivate my tablet so that I can preserve my assets
(ebooks)?

Thanks a lot!
