Hello Christine.
Deleting the hidden litpath.lpt file and annotations didn't work.
These books were never anywhere, but my fixed hard drive (drive C:) when
first opened. I always run them from my drive C:. They only are moved off
C: when I don’t need them anymore.
Metra is right about the external drive being the culprit. When I active
reader originally on this laptop I had 1 external drive attached. When I
travel I rarely attach the external drive, but I thought maybe it was the
lack of an internet connection.
However, I just added an second external drive a few days ago and when I
went to open a secured book – the book wouldn’t open. Reader would flash
open and closed. Only unsecured books would open and stay open. So, I
disconnected the 2nd external drive then the secured book opened and stays
open.
Post by MSReaderGirlCJ and Metra,
If your books were on an external hardrive when you first opened them then,
indeed the Reader is looking for them there. You should be able to resolve
this by deleting the hidden litpath.lpt file and any book annotations,
copying the book to your local machine or storage media that you will be
traveling with and open the book from there. This will recreate a new
connection from the new location and will no longer be using the old
connection.
Let me know if this doesn't resolve your issue.

Post by CJThanks Christine for your assistance.
Thanks Metra, that indeed is my problem too. I have an external drive that
was attached at the time of activation and I don't always have it connected
when I travel. So, I didn't think to try that until you suggested it.
Maybe there will someday be a fix.
:)
Post by MetraPost by CJI wish this was the case. It looks like it doesn't work with Secure ebooks
when away from home.
Do you know if the reader (on Secured ebooks) is looking for specific
hardware attached to the laptop?
When I’m home and I have my laptop docked in the docking station the Secured
ebooks work.
Post by MSReaderGirlCJ,
As long as you have downloaded the book to your device or PC prior to your
trip you should be good to go. The only time you need to be connected to
the internet is when you are purchasing content or activating a device.

How do I
get
Reader to work (with my secure ebooks) in this case?- Hide quoted text -

CJ, I have a similar problem... which is why I was googling this
subject, to see if anything had changed recently.
The problem is probably not the internet connection but the fact that
you were docked when you activated your equipment... It does some kind
of read on the hardware. If the checksum changes, then secure books
can't be read.
My problem is external USB harddrives. If I turn one back on, all is
well. If it is off, then I can't read a secured ebook.
I have been asking MSFT for a fix for this for several years... at
least since 08/2004.
Good luck,
Metra
